"Ragus strong fortress, a city rich that has ancient origins, in which the market is a constant coming and going of people from all nations"
(Idrisi, the Book of Roger)
Ragusa and its province, located in the south-east of the island are worth a stay in any season and in all circumstances. Location of fiction success Montalbano, Ragusa is truly one of Italy's most fascinating provinces.
The capital, the seventh most populated town, located on the Iblei mountains, the city is very vibrant and rich in cultural relics from every era. Destroyed in 1693 by a devastating earthquake, was rebuilt in the eighteenth century. Therefore presents an unusual articulation in two urban districts, more than one part Ragusa, Ragusa and the other located on the plateau, built and rebuilt from the ruins of ancient cities in the ancient medieval buildings. The new city art works by the likes of Vaccarini, Palma, Vermexio, Ittar Sinatra. But it was the fundamental contribution of Gagliardi, who was responsible for the creation of that particular phenomenon known as the Baroque of Val di Noto. Making use of local limestone, warm, golden, reproduced and personalized models and schemes of extraordinary charm and beauty. That must be the fact that the city, for its high Nemer of churches and buildings of outstanding merit in 2002 and was listed as a World Heritage Site.
But Ragusa is not only the Baroque. Noteworthy are the monumental evidence relating to earlier times, many important archaeological sites that fall within its territory, including the remains of 'ancient Greek colony of Camarina. Important testimony relating to the Middle Ages and even to more recent times, such as the Castle of Donnafugata.
This phenomenon is highly suggestive troglodyte settlements. Since prehistoric times, the soft stone was excavated to accommodate the living and dead. These areas were then reused in later periods, in some cases to this day. Surely the "cave" in the province of Ragusa, often located in natural environment of extraordinary importance, are a major attraction, a must for those who wish to combine history, nature and folklore.
But the territory, with its beautiful sea and the incomparable sandy shores, is particularly suitable for those who love the traditional summer vacation, especially families with small children. Also considerable areas of natural interest.
But perhaps the charm of Dubrovnik is another. Walking through the streets of its territory tourists will be affected by the rhythms still lazy, sunny, ensnared by the long scroll of stone walls in white stone from the olive trees that recall the past. In short, the pace of our modern world will give way to the lazy flow of time.
But if you take out the evening, tourists will discover a different Ragusa, lively, dynamic, full of pubs, shops, entertainment opportunities.
"Urbs dives, opulent city, full of large families, and which forms the best part of the county"
(Vito Amico, Lexicon Siculum, 1757)
