II capital of the province occupies a promontory overlooking the sea and the sea has always marked the destiny of this community.
Trapani was originally a village called by the Greeks Sican Drepanon, ie sickle shape of the promontory occupied by the setting up.
The city was fully appreciated only by the Carthaginians, who had to transfer her to Rome at the end of the first Punic War.
After a period of prosperity, linked to the strategic location of its port, followed a long period of neglect caused by the invasions of the Vandals and the conquest of the Byzantines, which, however, left to itself in the area.
The Arab invasion marked the rebirth of the city. Its port is open to the merchants of the Mediterranean, got the privilege of being the first Sicilian port to receive goods from Tunis. Federico II in 1240 built a new port. The function of an obligatory stop in trade with Africa continued during the subsequent domination. The city continued to expand and there was the rise of some important middle-class families.
At the end of 1400 began the decline of the city, caused by economic stagnation, the danger turkish, which, together with piracy, had a negative effect on trade. The situation lasted for a long time, despite the construction of fortifications and the granting of legal privileges, such as the establishment of a national senate.
In the second half of the eighteenth century there was a significant recovery due to the concession lease of real property. Membership in the new Kingdom of Italy after the expulsion of the Bourbons, while producing a new phase of building expansion, however, failed to return the former glory to the city.
Today Trapani lives the decay of its traditional activities linked to the exploitation of the sea, the salt, active in the production of salt, as well as traps, related to the slaughter of tuna are being abandoned. There is still a good fishery, its port serves as a liaison with the Egadi tourism and is one of the main points of arrival, North African immigration.
